UVic CMC Visits Melbourne Green Mappers
In late October 2009, I was in Melbourne Australia after presenting at an open source mapping conference and had the chance to meet some great Green Mappers.
The pictures below show my visit to a very cool urban garden project called the "Urban Reforestation Garden" located in Victoria Harbour, Docklands. Visit their website at www.urbanreforestation.com.

Cowichan Sustainable Harvest Festival and Community Green Map Launch
On a glorious Sunday morning and afternoon at Providence Farm, the Cowichan Land Trust celebrated and launched the Community Green Map of the Cowichan Valley.
Here are a few photos from the event and of the farm.
Fernwood Community Green Map introduction
Mapping the ‘Hood'
“We abuse land because we regard it as a commodity belonging to us. When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and respect”, wrote Aldo Leopold.
With this in mind, we are initiating a project to map the heart and soul of our community.
Mosaic Panels Installed in SSMB Foyers
The Community Mosaic Project was installed in the SSMB Upper & Lower Foyers during the last week of August 2009. These panels were created by more than 200 participants in the last 14 months, in conjunction with community events, interpretive walks, classes and conferences, using ceramic discs from clay excavated during the building process & cast research artifacts, hand & foot prints.
Photos are still being taken of the installation process, & will be soon uploaded to this website. (See also: Making the Panels With Castings)
Cowichan Valley Community Green Map Launch!
Our Cowichan Valley Community Green Map has finally gone to the printers!
We are excited to announce the launch of the map with many of our
community partners at the Sustainable Harvest Festival at Providence Farm.
Surrounding the map launch will be a fall environmental fair, local music, a kid zone and harvest bounty. The map will be unveiled around 11:20am on the stage.

Creating Mosaics from Castings Project is Underway!
Ken is inviting everyone who has made castings to come help to create the mosaic panels, which will be installed in the foyer of the Social Sciences & Math Building.
Last Tuesday, Ken Josephson & Brenda Beckwith, with some UVIc faculty assistants, began the process of creating some Mosaic panels with castings made from UVic student's hand, foot, face prints & gathered indigenous plant material.

SNITCEL (Tod Inlet) Pit Cook!
Judith Arney and Ken Josephson were invited to a traditional pit cook and celebration hosted by John Bradley Williams and Earl Claxton Jr. at SNITCEL (Tod Inlet) on Saturday June 27. It was a great opportunity to meet some long time residents on the peninsula and collect a few stories for the Coastal Community Green Map project.
Today's Work Party Postponed...
Ken is away in Ucluelet talking mapping with schools and environmental organizations. Wendy is available (but I think her mind is on folk music and camping). Judith is busy planning the Coastal Mapping (with Seachange) workshops. I'm heading to the CEEN (CRD Environmental Educators Network) meeting, 4-6PM.
So... we think we'll postpone and do our work/drink@grad lounge another day! If you'ld like to help out around the Centre, let us know!
